For both the Staunton Spectator and the Republican
Vindicator, search ALL years for the word "Downey."
You will get a list of dates that you can click to go to abstracts for that day's newspaper. Once you get to the abstract files, use your browser's "find" function to search for the word "Downey." This will take you to an abstract of the article. If a full transcription of the article is available, read that as well.
As you read, take notes using the chart below.
After you have finished newspaper articles, go to the census manuscript search page for Augusta
County, Virginia. The web address is http://valley.vcdh.virginia.edu/govdoc/popcensus.html. Search for the
names of all the people named in the articles you
read.
Continue filling out the chart. For each person you search by, record full name, age, occupation, real and personal wealth, and birthplace.
After you have searched the census manuscripts, read Daniel Downey's last will and testament. Read and take notes on it as you did for the other sources.
