Germans and Irish in
Augusta and Franklin Counties

Group One: Occupations in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1860

Go to the census manuscript search page for Franklin County, Pennsylvania. The web address is http://valley.vcdh.virginia.edu/govdoc/
popcensus.html. Search by the occupations listed in the left column of the chart below. Remember to capitalize the first letter of the occupation when you enter it into the text box.

When you get your list of results, count the number of Irish and German immigrants of the occupation and fill in the chart below. If you run out of time, you can divide up the search between other teams in your group.

Put an asterick (*) in the Irish or German column if the occupation seems to be dominated by that particular group.

When you have finished the chart, answer these questions:

  1. Which of the two groups was concentrated in higher-status occupations?

  2. Can you think of any reasons that might explain the occupational differences between the two immigrant groups?

  3. Were any occupations dominated by members of one of the immigrant communities? What were they?

Note:If you find individuals with any of the following in the birthplace column, should you consider them German: Hanov, Cur H, Hesse, Baver, Baden, Saxon, Boyer, Breme, Witte, Darms, Alboc, Nassa, Coor, Cober, Kurn, Saxe-, Holst, Minum.
