Women in the Navy
PBS: Frontline - The Navy Blues

Description: This digital resource presents material drawn from Crossed Currents: Navy Women from WWII to Tailhook by Jean Ebbert and Marie-Beth Hall. It deals specifically with the issues of discrimination and sexual harassment that women in the Navy have been subject to. (Secondary source material).

Teaching Tips:

"Do Now" Suggestion
  • The teacher can choose 5-10 events from the timeline ("Women in the Navy: A Half Century Chronology) and give them to students in a random order. The students can try to place the events in chronological order, and then compare their attempts to the actual timeline.
Suggestion for Using this Resource as Part of a Lesson
  • There is a link on the website to "What Ails the Navy," which provides interviews with seven people (politicians, admirals and women) on that very question. The teacher can organize a jigsaw activity, where students are assigned an interview to read and interpret. The students then form groups, with a representative from each interview, and share the opinion of the subject of their interview.
