Women Come to the Front
Library of Congress: Digital Exhibitions

Description: This project website presents the brief biographies and major works of eight American women photojournalists and broadcasters who used their talents to document many aspects of World War II. (Primary source material with commentary).

Teaching Tips:

"Do Now" Suggestion
  • There are a number of photographs of the eight women doing their work at the front. The teacher could select a few pictures and ask the students to describe what they see (in a journal entry or discussion). Possible probing questions include: a) What is unique about these women? b) How are these women contributing to the war effort? c) What will life be like for these women when they return home?
Suggestion for Using this Resource as Part of a Lesson
  • Students can choose one of the women included on the website to research. After investigating their person, the students can write a letter home from the perspective of the woman about her experiences as a journalist/photographer during WWII.
