Nuremberg Trials Documents
Yale University Law School: The Avalon Project

Description: These digital resources provide an excellent opportunity for students to examine in detail the presentations and oral arguments of the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal. The sections entitled "Presentation of Cases" and "Testimony of Witnesses" allow them to address the content of VUS10.e by studying a true historical archive of these events. (Primary source material).

Teaching Tips:

"Do Now" Suggestion
  • The students can look at the "Presentation of Cases" section of the website. The teacher can ask them to write down the many charges presented against the Nazis in the trials (presented in a bulleted format on the site) and to add anything they already know about each charge. (For example, if the charge is "Waging Aggressive War Against Czechoslovakia, the students might already know about the German occupation of the Sudetenland) This can lead into students researching one or more charge more thoroughly.
Suggestion for Using this Resource as Part of a Lesson
  • Students can read the "Testimonies of Witnesses." They can pick a witness to write a historical journal entry from the perspective of the witness, recounting their experience and their involvement in the Nuremberg trials.
