(e) analyzing the Holocaust (Hitler's "final solution"), its impact on Jews and other groups, and postwar trials of war criminals.

Timeline of Nazi Abues
PBS: NOVA Online

Description: This resource presents a useful timeline summarizing the murderous racial policies of the Nazi regime. It can help students contextualize the policies and chronology of Hitler's "final solution."

Teaching Tips:

"Do Now" Suggestion
  • The teacher can assign a certain year of the timeline to each student. The students can investigate the timeline for their year in order to write a short paragraph summarizing the events and identifying any major turning points. If the teacher wants to continue the activity, students with the same year assignment can meet and combine their ideas to create a master paragraph. Finally, each year group can present their ideas.
Suggestion for Using this Resource as Part of a Lesson
  • Students can participate in a role-play of the postwar trials of war criminals. They can prepare an opening argument from the perspective of a prosecutor against a Nazi war criminal, in which they use at least 5 pieces of evidence from the timeline. Students will write their arguments, but also could perform them in small groups to practice their public speaking.
