Description: This National Archives collection of primary source documents related to the Lewis and Clark Expedition provides a contemporary look at a variety of aspects related to the Louisiana Purchase. It also contains suggested teaching activities. Use the search feature on the website to find the documents related to the Expedition. Search for "Lewis and Clark" and the results will come up.



Teaching Tips:

"Do Now" Suggestions
  • Review the documents on supplies that Lewis and Clark purchased. As a class list other necessary supplies that they might need on the journey and write them on the board.
  • Show a map that traces the route that Lewis and Clark took to the Pacific Ocean. Have students write down implications that this journey had on the future United States.
Suggestions for Using this Resource as Part of a Lesson
  • Give the Document Analysis worksheet to students to help organize information from documents 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9. Students will be placed in groups to work on one document. They will report their conclusions to the entire class including the most important points from the document that others in the class should know about.
  • Review the supplies and presents that were exchanged between Lewis and Clark and the Native Americans.
