Boston Tea Party
Library of Congress

Description: These images from the Library of Congress’ extensive collection of images of the American Revolution portray the passion of the patriotic cause. The Repeal is a political cartoon showing British officials marching in a funeral possession that symbolic of the repeal of the Stamp Act. The Boston Tea Party image is a historically inaccurate lithograph showing the Boston Tea Party and the people of Boston celebrating the event.

Teaching Tips:

"Do Now" Suggestions
  • Discuss the symbolism behind the funeral procession and the meaning of a repealed law.
  • Have students in small groups analyze the Boston Tea Party lithograph. Have them be history detectives searching for historical inaccuracies. Then discuss why the author would portray the event in that way.
Suggestions for Using this Resource as Part of a Lesson
  • Create a complete analytical and historical profile of either the Stamp or Tea Act. Discuss economic impact for both the British and Americans and reasons for supporting the acts or being a dissident.
  • Have students create newspaper articles to accompany the illustrations. Have some students or groups write the articles as part of a London newspaper while others write as though part of a Boston newspaper. Then come together as a whole class to discuss how an author’s perspective can change the meaning of an event.
