Robert Beverly's Account of Bacon's Rebellion
East Tennessee State University: Department of History

Description: Robert Beverly, described as "one of Virginia's earliest historians," explains the reasons for Bacon's Rebellion and provides a brief account of the events.

Teaching Tips:

"Do Now" Suggestion
  • What makes a leader? Read and discuss Bacon's effectiveness. Compare Bacon and Berkley's leadership. Did they possess different qualities than leaders today?
Suggestions for Using this Resource as Part of a Lesson
  • In small groups find evidence to support each given cause (one per group). Report to the class, and then discuss which had the most effect and why.
  • Compare the causes of the rebellion to those of the American Revolution? Was the rebellion a possible foreshadow of the Colonists' revolts against England?
