John White's Watercolors

This watercolor by John White depicts the village of Pomeiooc in the North Carolina coastal plain. It was this image that was used to create the computer-rendered village. The structures in the village are also similar in design to those that are reconstructed at Jamestown as a Powhatan village. It is very likely that the Indians of eastern North Carolina had contact with the Powhatans.

This watercolor is of a second village, that of Secoton. Some argue that this second image may be less accurate than the first, a creation of White's that mimicked the city style of many European cities with a main street and perpendicular roads off of it. It is suggested that White sent this image back to England with the hope of showing a more civilized native society that would entice other pioneers to America. The dancing ring in the bottom right of the image is reconstucted entirely at the Powhatan village at Jamestown.
