Evans Map of Eastern North America, 1755
This map of eastern North America, made by Lewis Evans in 1755, shows a label of "Monacans" and "Tuscaroras" just to the west of Albemarle. This evidences that, even as late as 1755, it was general knowledge that the Monacans inhabited areas near Albemarle, having not yet fully migrated to Bear Mountain. This same area just to the west of Albemarle is where the present archaeological site of Monasukapanough is located.
