Hearing Israel: Music, Culture and History at 60
An International Conference

As the State of Israel marks its sixtieth anniversary in 2008, the University of Virginia Jewish Studies Program is hosting a unique conference on music in Israel. This unprecedented gathering will feature leading Israeli, American, and European scholars exploring Israeli music as a window into national identity, politics, religion, and culture. Alongside the academic sessions, the conference will also feature concert performances by Israeli musical legends Etti Ankri and Moussa Berlin as well as cellist Uri Vardi and the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra.
The academic conference sessions will run Sunday, April 13, 9:00 AM – 1:15 PM and Monday, 9:00 AM - 6:15PM, with a keynote address by Professor Edwin Seroussi, Emanuel Alexandre Professor of Musicology, Chairman of the Musicology Department and Director of the Jewish Music Research Center, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, along with presentations by Nissim Calderon (Ben Gurion University), Motti Regev (Open University of Israel), Benjamin Brinner (University of California, Berkeley), Amy Horowitz (Ohio State University), Jehoash Hirshberg (Hebrew University), Barbara Johnson (Ithaca College), Abigail Wood (SOAS, University of London), Assaf Shelleg (Hebrew University/Tel Aviv University), David McDonald (Bowling Green State University), Galit Saada-Ophir (University of Toronto), Ronit Seter (Hebrew University), Amit Schejter (Pennsylvania State University), Francesco Spagnolo (Judah Magnes Museum/Hebrew University), Evan Rapport (New York University), Galeet Dardashti (University of Texas, Austin), and others.
All academic sessions are free and open to the public.

Concert Performances
Sunday, April 13
3:30-5:30 Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra Concert conducted by Kate Tamarkin, with cello soloist Uri Vardi, performing works by Bloch, Golijov, and Berlioz (Old Cabell Hall Auditorium)
8:00-10:30 Evening concert of Israeli popular, folk, and religious music featuring the Etti Ankri Band and the Moussa Berlin Ensemble (Abbott Center, Darden School of Business)

Advance tickets for the Sunday evening concert will be available for purchase through the Old Cabell Hall Box Office starting on March 10, as well as on the day of the concert at the Abbott Center, Darden School of Business (cash and check only): $10/$5 students/Free for UVA students.
