Northern Women

Eight women flew from Chicago to Jackson, Mississippi that Tuesday, August 11 1964. Two were black; six were white. In some ways, Dr. Height later explained, it was harder for the white women: “The black women had a whole community to greet them; the white women met with a lot of white community hostility, so we made sure there were enough of them to reinforce their courage and commitment.”

Southern Women
