How to Explore the Southern History Database Maps
- Click on the "Explore the Maps" link at the top of the page. This will take you to the main menu for all the SHD maps.
- Once you are on the SHD Maps page, you can easily navigate to the maps you are interested in. The maps are organized by decade and keywords, so choose the decade you are interested in by selecting one from the top of the screen, and then select the keyword your are interested in using the menu on the far right side of the screen.
- As the South expanded during the nineteenth century, new states and counties were formed throughout the decades. As a result all the SHD maps are accurate and specific to these changes over time, which is why they are organized by decade.
- Within each of those decades, the maps can be parsed by individual keywords. For example, in the 1810s you could see a map of all the episodes that had a keyword for "African-Americans," "Health/Death," "Slavery," or any of the eighteen SHD keywords.
- Using and Navagating the Maps:
- The maps are color-coded to show the geographic spread of the episodes. The white color on the screen is the default color, representing a county where no entries are recorded. In any particular area, deeper and darker colors on the map represent a greater concentration of entries in the database for that particular place. To see a breakdown of how many events are represented by which colors, look at the legend on the bottom right side of the screen.
- Once you are looking at a particular map, you can navagate it by using the tools on the bottom left side of the screen:
- You may choose to display the rivers, state names, county names, and cities on the map.
- To zoom in or out of a part of the map, simply use the "Zoom" tools with either the plus or minus symbols.
- They pyramid symbol will take you back to the full map view.
- The "i" symbol is what you use to select a county you want information about.
- How to Use the "i" Tool:
- In your map, zoom in to an area that you are interested in.
- Using the "i" tool, click on a county that has events in the database.
- This will bring up all the events in the database (that match your map) from the county you selected.
