What Is My Goal in the Project?

Over the course of the semester, you and your classmates will create a unique record of the nineteenth-century South. You will research a particular time and place in the South, compose episodes that richly narrate your findings, and enter those episodes into the SHD. Together, the class will contribute to one of the most complete records of life during a century in the South.
Your goal as a member of this project will be to research and write about ten episodes that occured in your assigned time and place. These episodes must be well-written, evoke significant themes in southern history, and add to our knowledge about your time and place and the nineteenth-century South more generally. You must use both secondary sources (books and articles written by historians) and primary sources (documents from the period) to successfully write an episode for the database. An example of a successful episode has been provided here. After you have written your episodes and revised them in consultation with your TA, you will submit them to the Database online. Once you and your classmates have entered your events into the Database, you will be able to access (through a search engine and dynamic maps) a unique composite portait of life in the nineteenth-century South.
If you have any questions about the assignments, the Database, or any other part of the project please do not hesitate to contact your TA. We have also written detailed guides to every part of the project, available on this website, which are built to help guide you as you research and enter your events into the Database.
